Biggest Surprises in Our Trip to Greece

Sure, Greece is a dream destination for most. Stunning views, amazing food, tons of history – what’s not to love? When dreaming of a destination for so long, we tend to have visions and preconceived notions. But Greece had some surprises in store. Here are the biggest surprises for me in my trip to Greece …

How much I loved Athens

After countless blogs, Instagram posts and YouTube videos, the reviews of Athens were mixed. Most recommended needing no more than 1-2 nights as a stopover destination before sailing to the Greek islands. But beyond the obligatory Acropolis tour, Athens has a lot to offer. I could have spent hours peeking in and out of the shops and tavernas of Plaka or window shopping the luxury brands in Kolonaki. Athens is a city with grit and a lot to offer. It deserves recognition as a destination in and of itself – not just a layover to the Greek islands.

Gorgeous views during our night time stroll after dinner.

Beach water is cold

I was born and raised in New York, but the moment my toes hit the shore of Perissa (Santorini) and again in Agios Prokopios (Naxos), it was clear I am a Florida girl. I never thought to research the temperature of the waters in Greece. Countless pictures of bright, sunny skies and crystal blue water, my brain figured it must be just like the Caribbean. Wrong! Getting in the water took some time to adjust and certainly was refreshing from the hot sun. But, I found myself being less than my normal water baby self.

That gorgeous water is cold! But the clarity and view is unparalleled. Well worth it!

Variety of Foods

Long before I started planning a trip to Greece, I declared myself a Greek food lover. Granted, my understanding of Greek food is through an American lens and a broader “mediterranean” categorization. I could not wait for all the Greek salads, souvlaki, and (my favorite) grilled octopus. What I quickly learned is that Greeks love a variety of meats cooked in a variety of ways. From veal in a tomato sauce to grilled pork chops, there is something for everyone. With the exception of Feta, I never considered Greece a “cheese” destination, but being exposed to graviera, kasseri, and mizithra, it is now on the list. And, without a doubt, Greece is highly underrated in the coffee and wine categories. A Greek coffee definitely kicks you into gear, and the white wines were perfectly crisp and refreshing to meet the needs of Greek summer. I am keeping my eyes open for Greek varieties in my next wine haul.

It’s Hot, But With a Breeze

Schedules dictated that the only time the schedule of our 11 travelers converged on availability was in the bullseye of precisely when most recommend not traveling to Greece. One of the biggest reasons cited to avoid late July and the month of August is the heat. But here’s when being from Florida came in handy — the Greece heat had nothing on the hell of humidity we experience in Florida. Was it hot? Yes. Did we sweat? Yes. But, unlike Florida summer days, you could at least feel relief in the shade and count on an evening breeze. Once on the islands, the evening breeze was reminiscent of fall days. If you come from a hot and humid climate, then you will be just fine even in the dead heat of Greek summer.

2019 Travel Resolutions

Happy New Year! There’s nothing like January 1 to make you feel like anything is possible. Travel goals are no exception. For the past 3 years, I have included travel goals in my yearly planning and it has made all the difference.

Scratch Off Another Bucketlist Item for Mom

In 2018, my XtoZ family crew (13) traveled to Spain. It allowed quite a few family members to check off a bucket list item. So, the 2019 goal? Continue the trend. My mom turns 65 this year, so what better way to celebrate! I will share details in the near future, but doing so now would ruin the surprise.

Maximize the Long Weekend

Too often I fall into the mindset that you need long chunks of time to travel. Yet, I know it’s not true. In 2019, I want to look at 3-day weekends as opportunities for travel. We so often add a day to further extend the weekend, so there’s a world of opportunities (literally).

Return to the High Seas

My family went through its cruising phase. We have done it three times as an XtoZ crew (we once totaled more than 20). Perhaps a return to the seas for the easy, no-brainer vacay.

Improve at Documenting My Travels

I should have done this before starting a blog, huh? Well, the blog only increases the need and incentives for accomplishing this resolution. I still want to live in the moment, but I need to do a better job of documenting with pictures and written details. If nothing else, I want my son to be able and look back and see where he has traveled and the experiences we shared.

We will see where 2019 leads us, but the destination is not be the measuring stick. Rather, the deliberate goal setting and flexibility will determine success.

2018 Travel Successes

The turn of a new year is always a time for reflection. While the inclination is to look forward to the possibilities of the new year, there is an opportunity to look back on the accomplishments of the previous year. Sure we could harp on those things we did not accomplish or the carry overs on the “to do” list, but each year we make strides. And this year, I made strides in my multigenerational travel endeavors.

Got my Husband to Europe

From the moment we started dating, my husband and I shared dreams of travel. We’ve been to many U.S. cities and have explored a good portion of the Caribbean. But, it’s been a major “must do” to get him to Europe. With our November trip to Spain, I accomplished the goal and opened his appetite to everything the continent has to offer.

Committed to the Carryon

I’ve read countless tips, tricks and blogs that show great travelers commit to a carryon luggage. Most of my trips for business and quick weekend getaways were packed into a carryon, but for longer hauls (5 days or more), I tended to retreat to the (what I believed to be) comfort of a larger, checked-in luggage. No more! I managed to pack for our 10-day Spain trip all within the confines of my trusty Away carryon (yes, I am a full Away convert). And, guess what? I did not miss a thing. In fact, I still believe I overpacked — albeit on a much smaller scale than usual. After experiencing the freedom and true comfort of traveling with only a carryon provides, I could never go back to the burden of checking in, worrying about luggage arriving, hefty fees, etc.

This alone was an accomplishment. But even better yet, I got my husband and mother to sign up for the same commitment! That’s right, the chronic over packers managed to commit to the carryon. They too say they’ll never go back. Success!

Scratched a Destination Off of Mom’s Bucket List

Sharing travel experiences with my mother is important to me. For years, she has talked about Spain. She did not have specifics in mind or demanding agendas. The goal was simple: experience the culture and see the architecture. And in 2018, we struck through this bucket list item. She got to ooh and ahh at the masterpieces of Gaudi in Barcelona, got swept by the charm of Sevilla and shopped the charming stores of Madrid. She left feeling it was worth the wait and inspired to knock off more bucket list destinations.

Took Family Photos

Since my son entered the world in March 2014, I have spent a good chunk of change on photos documenting his milestones and providing content for the annual holiday card. Year after year, however, we never got around to a family pic. When researching our Spain trip, the thought occurred – why not combine the two? I did my research, booked a photo tour and voila! I was so happy with the result that booking a photographer will become my norm during family travel.

Played the Points Game

I have accumulated points across loyalty programs and credit cards for some time, but 2018 was the year I really got in the game. It paid off – roundtrip airfare for our family of three to Spain all covered by points. For points professionals this may sound trivial, but it was a giant step for me. Now I have the bug and it will lead to much more point accumulation and redeeming.

In review, 2018 was a great year. I look forward to expanding the travel successes in 2019. What were your 2018 travel successes?

The XtoZ Journey Begins

Little did I know the what I’ve called “family vacation” during my 36 years of existence is in fact something crowned one of the top travel trends of 2018: multigenerational travel. For me, taking vacations with my mom, aunts, uncles, cousins and now my child has been the norm.

My family travel squad ranges in age from 4 (Generation Z) to 75 (Baby Boomers). We cover as many as three generations in any given trip. It is not uncommon for us to have a herd of 10 or more. We’ve done a variety of travel including beach retreats, all inclusive resorts, cruises and most recently a trek through Spain. But more importantly, we have an even longer where to next wishlist. Truth is that while no trip is perfect, we always return home content and committed to the next trip.

So, with a desire to start a blog for a variety of reasons, I decided to share tales of our travels, lessons learned and other tidbits aimed at inspiring multigenerational travel. I hope you will join me on the journey and engage in the conversation.

I’d love to hear from others who have a desire for multigenerational travel, have questions or ideas for the blog. Feel free to reach out at xtoztravel@gmail.com. Here’s to many more adventures to see the world and sharing our XtoZ adventures with the world.
